Canadian Barn Project

Back in 2007 a timber framed barn was offered to us for sale. This wasn't anything unusual as these buildings do come to the end of their life as functional agricultural structures and are usually dismantled and stripped for the reclaimed timber within. However, we always feel they should be maintained as complete buildings where possible and when a Canadian client showed an interest we took the opportunity to embark on an exciting project; to dismantle the building and ship it to the West coast of Canada.

Work began in 2008 and the barn was deconstructed carefully and each piece recorded, labelled and stacked into shipping containers.

Two years on and construction has commenced with a Canadian carpentry team working with unfamiliar traditional framing techniques from photographs and plans......

Once complete, the barn will be the oldest building to be found on the West coast of Canada and will begin its new life as a charming home.

Demolition Works

We are registered with the CIS as both a contractor and sub-contractor and are fully insured to undertake deconstruction works. These can be projects of any size from taking down a modern bungalow or extension, to being involved with the demolition of large civic buildings to carefully taking apart a timber framed barn to be shipped to Canada and re-built * More on that particular project to come.....
Our approach is very much one of careful deconstruction as opposed to the 'ball & chain' method ensuring all materials are delicately handled, cleaned and suitably packaged by us on site. This guarentees both provenance and quality for our customers.

We like to choose a nominated charity each year and for 2010 Sue Ryder Care has been selected.
The local Leckhampton Court Hospice does an admirable job of providing residential care, day care and care within the home for patients with life threatening conditions and is currently in it's 30th year of providing this service.

There's a definate feeling of Spring in the air at the moment. The weather has improved, lambs are playing in the surrounding fields and we are pleased to see our resident swallows have returned to nest for a third year!

York Flag - Just arrived.....

Over 100 M sq of top-grade external York has just come into stock. Lovely smooth, weathered face, decent sizes and all under 3" thick. This would ideally be sold as a complete lot.

These are really unusual. Originally forming the turning circle of a windmill, these hardwood sections have been handled carefully, treated and waxed to create really impressive timbers.

Would ideally suit an inglenook fireplace or create a focal point in any room.

Listed Property Show

For the second year running we were exbibitors at the Listed Property show at London Olympia, and with nearly 6,000 people attending the event over the two days, it was a successful weekend.

It is always a pleasure to meet new potential customers in this way and discuss their individual needs and hopefully this has lead to our involvement in numerous new projects for the year ahead.

We have remained busy throughout 2009, being involved in both sizeable building contracts and supplying to our private customers and thought that we could take this opportunity to share with you how some of our materials have been applied.

The guys have been busy recently pulling down various buildings. This has generated new stocks of reclaimed bricks for the yard.

New oak

Alongside our supplies of reclaimed timber, we also stock new oak. This is QP1 grade, seasoned constructional timber widely used within the building trade.
Varying section sizes are in stock at present or we can order specifically what you are looking for.

If the beam is to be in keeping with a period property, we can distress it, scallop the edges and stain it to look like an original timber.

UKTV BBC HOME TRUTHS

BBC Bristol are currently looking for people to feature in their new series 'Home Truths' (for UKTV). In this series, presenter Nick Knowles will help homeowners through their renovation projects, delving into the property's history.
So if you're about to restore either one room or a complete house to it's former glory, they would like to hear from you.

Filming is due to sart in Mid August therefor BBC Bristol are looking for contributors who are just about to begin their renovation so the works can be featured from start to completion. All properties are considered from tudor cottages to victorian terraces.

Cotswold Flags

We often have large quantities of traditional Cotswold flag in stock. This can be 'dressed' - edges straightened and lightly polished to bring out the natural patina of the stone - to give a particularly high quality finish to the product without interfering with that 'worn in' look.

A complete 'Cabochon' floor has just come into stock. This special design incorporates slate inserts into the limestone tiles. The total amount available measures to 15 M sq, the perfect quantity to create an impressive kitchen floor / hallway........

Summerhouses

Our custom built Summerhouses are ideal for creating an outdoor living space to suit your surroundings. All are sympathetically designed to blend quickly into the landscape and the highest quality new and reclaimed materials are used throughout.

These oakframed buildings can be finished with a wide range of materials such as reclaimed bricks, lime mortar, stone or leaded glass. he roof could be tiled or thatched.

We have just completed building the Summerhouse above. A a simple octagonal oak frame weatherboarded and finished with a cedar shingle roof and leaded windows and doors. As this is a bespoke service, everything can be selected by the customer to suit their own taste; from the oak floorboards inside to the hand forged ironware decorating the windows and doors.

This example has been built in our yard for you to view. (As it has had time to weather and settle in, you would be forgiven for thinking it has always been here!) Why not pay us a visit and take a closer look? With the current economic climate and the need to 'be green', there has been an increased interest in the use of reclaimed materials.
By using reclaimed materials as part of your project, you are re-using a waste product and therefore maintaining a low carbon footprint (especially if these materials have been sourced locally.)
Designers, architects and landscapers are all becoming increasingly interested in the use of reclaimed products and if you are in the process of making a planning application they should be considered for their sustainability and the instant character you can achieve.
It is important to consider the use of reclaimed materials at the very beginning of your project - this way your reclamation yard can source the best quantity, quality (and price) available.

Now is the perfect time to think about any fireplaces that need attention as the nights are drawing in and the temperature's definately starting to fall. We currently have a large selection of reclaimed fireplaces and surrounds from simple victorian cast iron grates to more ornate carved stone surrounds.

Fixtures and fittings such as fenders and firebaskets are also in stock.

There are many options to be considered for use in hearths: New slate pieces, reclaimed bricks (have you considered a herringbone design using smaller 2" bricks?) and various reclaimed flags to name a few.

Don't forget, we are able to offer a cutting service if needed to ensure a good fit!

We are able to supply vast quantities of certain materials, such as these 3" red bricks. We have approximately 20,000 available at present, all packaged and ready for delivery. Being from a single demolition project, they are consistent in both colour and quality.

Traditional Cotswold Stone Roof Tiles

Traditional stone tiled roofs are a recognisable and much loved feature of the Cotswolds but as many of these are listed properties, they require sensitive repair by skilled roofers to meet conservation standards. We specialise in reclaimed Cotswold stone tiles, having a consistant stock of locally sourced slates available from Stonefields to the slightly thicker Tetbury stone.

Upon arrival, each one is cleaned and stacked vertically to avoid being damaged and sorted by size ready to be laid in the customary diminishing fashion.

Reclaimed paving

Despite the typically wet English summer we are having, peoples attentions are still turning to their gardens and outdoor living areas. Laying a patio or paving is a quick and easy way of creating a low-maintainance area to enjoy. We currently have a range of reclaimed paving in stock including York stone, Blue Lias, traditional Cotswold flag and the reclaimed sandstone pictured.

There is a large amount of this available at present. Being quite uniformed in both depth and flag sizes, it is incredibly easy to lay and the smooth finish means it even looks great when wet.

This is a very durable product, available in a range of colourings from blues to buff.

When buying reclaimed paving:

* We sell our paving by area rather than weight. This can be benificial as the thicker the slabs, the less you'd get to a tonne.

* Some larger pieces may be priced seperately as they can be harder to source.

* Look out for oil stains - if the paving has been reclaimed from an old mill or factory floor, they may be oil stained. This can be difficult to remove and when re-laid could seep out.

Being flexible, it means you, as a customer, will be given the correct price at the time, ie: if we have done some clever buying and can afford to sell at a lower price than normal you will benefit.
There is always somebody available here to answer any queries so please don't hesitate to ask - this doesn't commit you to buying!

Our summerhouses are custom-built to order allowing you the freedom to design an area which suits you and your personality. By looking at the surrounding environment of the intended space, we will produce a sympathetic design which will blend quickly into the landscape.

A wide range of materials and techniques are to be considered, from choosing the bricks and mortar to installing the windows and deciding whether to have the roof tiled or thatched.

Malvern 2008

We were more than happy to be involved with the RHS spring gardening show again at Malvern. We worked with the students from Hartpury College who had designed a Mediterranean terrace complete with Farmhouse, vegetable patch and olive tree. I say we worked with them but in honesty, we supplied the materials and they did the rest!!

The finished entry looked fantastic and was awarded a silver-gilt medal.

This project was a good opportunity for people to see reclaimed materials used to their best potential. It hopefully gave some inspiration too, as the farmhouse structure built for the garden could be used as an example of the custom built summerhouses we offer.

With current inflation and the cost of building works and renovation, there has never been a better time to discover the world of reclamation and the materials and services available.
I was alarmed to discover recently that nearly half of the waste going to landfill is the rubble created by the demolition and building trade. Any building, however modern, generates reclaimed materials and we should always re-use and recycle where possible.
Our aim with this blog is to inform you about our company and the reclamation process in general. We will include information on any new products and items as they become available, detail any upcoming events or projects of interest and post articles about Winchcombe Reclamation.

Traditional building techniques:

With a surge in popularity and a number of television programmes highlighting the advantages of property development, more and more people are taking on restoration projects. This can be a very satisfying ( if time-consuming and exspensive ) process but those with a true passion for the building and it's heritage achieve fantastic results.

A key element is the use of traditional materials and trades. Unfortunately, specialist craftsmen such as blacksmiths, thatchers and dry stone wallers are not as widely available as they once were even though their skills are imperative to the repair and preservation of old buildings.

We work closely with a number of local building craftsmen who use traditional techniques and work sympathetically with our products. On this page, we intend to highlight some of these forgotten skills and post a directory for your reference, introducing you to a few characters along the way.

Our resident swallows

A pair of swallows took residence in one of the buildings here at the beginning of June and promptly filled the nest with a clutch of chicks. Both WR staff and customers alike had to avoid being divebombed as the parents shot in and out feeding their noisy young.

Then last week disaster struck when we came in to find the nest had been attacked (possibly by a cat or magpie) and the chicks gone. All went quiet, although the two adult birds continued to visit.

We were pleased to see this morning that not only had one of the chicks survived but had fledged and was participating in flying lessons around our yard!

Hopefully, these birds will continue to nest here and visit us again next year. Watch this space for 'Spring Watch' 2009........
